The Spanish Military

Hospital Museum

Royal Hospital of Our Lady Guadalupe

The Spanish Military Hospital Museum building is a reconstruction of a Military Hospital that stood on this site during the Second Spanish Colonial Period, 1784-1821.

Showcased in the museum are areas of Military Hospital life you would have experienced had you been a patient in 1791.

THE MOURNING ROOM

Equipped with the Priest's tools for blessing the patient before death occurred.

THE SURGEON'S OFFICE

Why were doctors called "Sawbones"?  View the tools of the trade and find out what practices are still used today.

THE WARD

Strict regulations dictated by the Government of Spain defined medical care in the Hospital.

THE APOTHECARY

The Hospital had many of its medications shipped over from Spain, however, many times the apothecary had to make their own medicines out of herbs from the garden.
